German FA chief nominated for FIFA

NYON: UEFA on Friday nominated German football federation chairman Theo Zwanziger to replace outgoing FIFA executive committee member Franz Beckenbauer.

"The only candidate is the chairman of the German football federation, Theo Zwanziger," the secretary general of European football's governing body, Gianni Infantino said after his nomination was confirmed by UEFA's executive committee.

FIFA, world football's governing body, announced late last year that Beckenbauer would not seek-relection as a member of its executive committee member next March for family reasons.

The former German footballing star, manager and executive later told the daily Bild that his confidence in FIFA had been tainted by the way the vote awarding the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar had been handled.

His position on the FIFA executive committee is usually occupied by a European.

Zwanziger is already a member of UEFA's executive committee.

Spanish FA chief Angel Maria Villar Llona was also confirmed for re-election as a FIFA Vice President next March, UEFA said.
